JOANNE GREENBAUM: Hollywood Squares
September 10 – October 31, 2009
Opening Reception: Thursday September 10th, 6-8pm

D’Amelio Terras is pleased to present its sixth solo exhibition of work by Joanne Greenbaum. Her latest canvases wildly demonstrate a continued development of the artist’s practice of unique and identifiable abstract painting.

Greenbaum’s new editorial approach finds her destructing the constructed. She continues to push the boundaries of painting while simultaneously exercising restraint: thick layers of knifed-on oil contrast with translucent drips that bleed into expanses of white canvas. By quoting the sparse elements in her early work, Greenbaum creates intermittent windows through dense layers of form and color. Erasing and gesture become the content of each painting. As she carves graphic contours, a serial segmentation combined with the un-finished alludes to a further potential inherent in the work.

Joanne Greenbaum’s paintings are featured in the Phaidon title “Painting Abstraction: New Elements in Abstract Painting” by Bob Nickas (September 2009). In 2008, Greenbaum was the subject of a solo museum exhibition at Haus Konstruktiv, in Zurich, Switzerland that traveled to Museum Abteiberg, in Monchengladbach, Germany. She shows in London with greengrassi Gallery and in Basel, Switzerland with Nicolas Krupp Gallery.
